Belted Kingfisher

I like this shot a lot but it's not the close up I've been hoping for. The light and pose were great so I'll have to be satisfied for now.

Solitary Sandpiper

The Solitary Sandpipers arrived back in the pond this week. While paddling the kayak the thought  occurred that the water level had dropped enough to make the edges suitable for feeding for these guys. No sooner had the thought occurred when two flew in front of me and later allowed me to drift in for a few good close-ups.

Lesser Yellowlegs

Lesser Yellowlegs, August 18 - Hemeon's Head. While trying to get close to the two Stilt Sandpipers in the pond I had much better luck with the Yellowlegs and Semipalmated Sandpipers.

Ruddy Turnstones

I'm making up for lost time today. These shots were taken on August 4th in Mathew's Lake, NS. The turnstone on the rock was really enjoying the barnacles and allowed me to get closer than normal.

Common Tern

It's not often I get this close to a tern. They didn't seem that bothered by my presence today but that may change as the young ones get older. August 12, Mathew's Lake.
The flight shot was taken last week in Jones's Harbour.

Hudsonian Godwit

I have other godwit pictures on the blog but I really like this flight shot. August 12, Mathew's Lake, NS.

Black-bellied Plover

Generally these guys are hard to get close to, today there was a pair that didn't seem to want to leave a certain area. They put on quite a display when I went back later.

Semipalmated Plover - flight shot

This is probably the best flight shot of a Semipalmated  Plover I've taken so far.

Broad-winged Hawk - juvenile

This juvenile Broad-winged Hawk was hanging out near our pond yesterday. The adults don't generally allow this close an approach for shots. I think I find the younger ones more attractive than the adults.

Great Blue Heron

I wasn't really planning on adding another Great Blue Heron to the blog roll but this picture was too nice to leave off. Aug 3, East Jordan, NS.

White-rumped Sandpiper

The White-rumped Sandpipers arrived a couple weeks back but they are here in numbers now. Mathew's Lake, Shelb. Co. NS

Red Knot

One of three Red Knots that have been feeding on the sand flats in Mathew's Lake in recent days. A friend reminded me that these birds are currently in decline due to their dependence on the horseshoe crab and its decline due to over harvesting in the Chesapeake Bay area.
