Greater Scaup

One lone male in a small pond near a much larger body of water. I suspect this bird was injured and had separated from its flock. It was still actively feeding and seemed fairly healthy otherwise.

Snowy Owl

I didn't go out to photograph Snowy Owls many times this past Winter. This was one day I hoped to find one even just to see one again this year. I don't always need a good photo to enjoy the experience, sometimes it's fun just to watch their behavior.

Something You've All Been Waiting For - Merganser Portraits

I know I post a lot of these birds but it's only because they are one of the more plentiful waterfowl in the area that I do most of my birding in. They're also not as wary as some of the other species and to be honest there is not a lot of variety in this area when it comes to waterfowl so you take what you are given. In the warmer months there is generally more variety of other birds to shoot. These are mostly male and female Common Mergansers with a male and female Red-breasted thrown in for good measure.

I have some other different waterfowl shots to post coming up, these are the last of the merganser shots from this past Winter.

Purple Sandpipers

This was the only highlight of what was otherwise a pretty grim day in late February.

Common Mergansers - They really give a flap

There wasn't much open water on this day in February so it wasn't hard to find where the mergansers were hanging out. When they were done feeding they spent most of their time flapping their wings to dry out before climbing up on the bank to rest and preen.
