Northern Parula

There were several Parulas mixed in with the Yellow-rumped  today. One Blackpoll today as well - at the shore in East Jordan.

Blackpoll Warbler - Fall plumage

There have been lots of Fall plumage Blackpolls passing through in recent days. I guess they're coming from farther north since there are few breeding birds in this area.

Hudsonian Godwit

Baird's Sandpiper

This is the first Baird's Sandpiper I've seen this year and only the second in the last two years. It's always great to be able to pick them out amongst the many Semipalmated, Least and White-rumped Sandpipers. Mathew's Lake, NS.

Swamp Sparrow - Portrait

I like the detail on this bird. The lighting was good and the bird was co-operative - staying still long enough to have it's portrait taken.

Whimbrel

I was thinking that there were fewer Whimbrel around this year than last year when I found this lone bird. He/she was quite approachable and allowed me a few chances for shots.

American Golden Plover

The Golden Plovers arrived a week or so ago. This week they were fairly numerous - more so than last year it seems.

Blue-winged Teal

This one is from September 10th but I like it enough to include it here. This was the first day I was able to find any Blue-winged Teal among the Green-winged.

Pectoral Sandpiper

I've been trying to get close to one of this species for a while. In my experience they can be quite skittish and their numbers are small compared to other sandpipers. I'm pretty happy with this,

Wood Duck

I was happy to find some Wood Ducks today. This guy is in partial eclipse plumage but still very colourful.

Merlin with Baltimore Oriole

These pictures might make some people unhappy but this is nature at work I suppose. I would have liked to have seen the oriole before he met his demise but I probably would have felt worse about his fate.

Semipalmated Plover - Portrait

Sometimes the birds let you get closer than they would normally allow you. This was one of those occasions. Black Point Beach NS.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

I was trying for a few flight shots today without any luck. Well at least the wings are extended on this one. The portrait below was taken the same day.

Bobolink

It was a good year for Bobolinks this year, at least for me. One male in breeding plumage in the spring and this one in fall plumage now in September.

Greater Yellowlegs

Three Greater Yellowlegs shots from the last few days. The flight shot is from Mathew's Lake, the other two from East Jordan of presumably the same bird about two days apart.
